Wish is usually used before a verb in the by tense.  Information technology often talks about regrets or wants.

  • "I wish I hadn't made that mistake."
  • "I wish I had started sooner."
  • "I wish I had a canis familiaris."

We use it to express that nosotros want something to happen, but nosotros take no control over information technology.

  • Is your dad going to buy you lot a new automobile?
  • I wish!

In fairy tales and children's stories, some form of magic makes wishes come true.

Knowing this helps you lot to recollect to use "wish" when you tin can't control the outcome or about something in the past you tin't change.

Hope works more for future tense, though it can as well be used for the present tense.  It oftentimes focuses on aspirations.

  • "I promise to detect beloved."
  • "I hope I go a proficient TOEFL score."
  • "I promise you enjoyed the prove."

Pro-tip: If we don't know the consequence of something, nosotros utilize hope. Once we know the effect and we can't change it, we use wish.

  • I promise I get a good score on my exam.
  • I wish I had gotten a proficient score on my examination.

Michelle :

In this episode, Lindsay and Michelle bear witness y'all the side by side about common mistake in our top xv fault series. What is the departure between wish and hope and how practice you know which i to use? Observe out today.

Lindsay McMahon :

Hey Michelle. How'southward life in New York today?

Michelle :

Hey Lindsay. Hey Lindsay. It is good. It is adept. I hope the weather stays nice for a while though.

Lindsay McMahon :

I know. I know. Yep. The atmospheric condition is always the key in New York. Life in New York is so exciting, but information technology's then much ameliorate when it's warm and sunny.

Michelle :

Aye. I kind of wish that similar, it would be winter, but only for the months of December and January. Possibly like end of November, December, a little bit of January, so it's done.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah, totally.

Michelle :

I like some cold, but that's pretty much it for me.

Lindsay McMahon :

I understand what you lot mean. Because it's a existent subway culture, right, in New York, a lot of walking and information technology's difficult to through the snow.

Michelle :

It is. It is. Yep. You don't want to take to do that, only whatever.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yep, no, no, no. But another thing that our listeners don't want to exercise is make the almost common mistakes in English, right? We desire to avoid these big mistakes. I just did a piffling transition. Did y'all see what I did at that place? I'thou not sure how successful that was.

Michelle :

I what you did. No, yous did. It was wonderful.

Lindsay McMahon :

I don't know, but we'll move on anyway. Then guys, we're in a serial here of the top xv, most mutual mistakes and you've heard me and Aubrey record a couple of episodes nigh the first ii. And at present we're counting downwards. Nosotros're on number 13 out of 15. Then what is the mutual fault that nosotros're talking almost today, Michelle?

Michelle :

Okay. Today we're talking near the words wish and promise. Now I just used them. I don't know if you realized what I was doing.

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh my God. I was too busy trying to make my transition,

Michelle :

Oh, you actually didn't?

Lindsay McMahon :

And I didn't even hear you lot use them. What did you lot say?

Michelle :

Oh, perchance. Oh, then perchance you were like, why are you like, what are you doing? Well, first I said, I hope that the weather condition stays nice.

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh, you did.

Michelle :

And then I said, I wish that it would exist cold only for a couple months.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah.

Michelle :

Oh, you lot didn't realize. Oh, see I was so sneaky.

Lindsay McMahon :

No, it went correct over my head. It went right over my head. That's my fault. That's my fault. That'due south a good one. Clever though.

Michelle :

Thank you. Thank you.

Lindsay McMahon :

Allow's pick autonomously that example then, correct? You said, I wish. What was information technology once again? You lot said, I wish.

Michelle :

I said, I wish that it would only be cold in New York for a couple months.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay. Yes. And and so I hope.

Michelle :

I promise that the weather is nice for a long fourth dimension, basically.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. Okay. So what is the typical, if you only think real quick, Michelle, as a native speaker, what is the difference between wish and promise?

Michelle :

Okay. Well wish is more than similar a specific thing that it may be likely to happen, similar I wish to have three wishes, like in fairy tales or whatever. Right. And promise is I think more realistic.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. Aye. Aye. And and then another affair that I think, I recall the biggest angle I would say is that wish is usually used more than and so for something in the past. Right. I mean, you said, I wish it wouldn't snow or I wish that information technology would not exist wintertime. In that location would not be so much winter in New York is basically what yous said. Right. And that's good too. That'southward a hypothetical.

Michelle :

Right.

Lindsay McMahon :

I wish there weren't so much wintertime in New York.

Michelle :

Something Like that. Correct. But you lot're right. And so we do have kind of like that fairytale feeling for wish. Oh, If I had three wishes, the offset ane would…

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah.

Michelle :

But also, if you're looking for another, I hateful that was like a very broad explanation I gave, only if you're actually looking for a succinct i yes, often it's used in the past tense. Right. So you can't say, I hope nigh the past.

Lindsay McMahon :

No, you lot really can't at all. So this is the clear dividing line betwixt the two, right? No. Yeah. You definitely tin can't. Y'all can't say, like let's give some examples nearly how to utilise wish in the past.

Michelle :

Correct. Okay. So like I wish I hadn't made that mistake.

Lindsay McMahon :

Exactly. So you would never say, I'm not fifty-fifty going to say it because it doesn't make sense. Nosotros don't want to teach you lot guys poor English language. And so can't use hope in that example. You merely can't. It'due south not functional. I wish I had started studying sooner. Right. Because the test is tomorrow. Definitely can't utilise hope. Right, Michelle?

Michelle :

Right, right, right. No.

Lindsay McMahon :

And now here's the kind of the fairy tail affair that you were pointing to before. This is like a dreamy thing.

Michelle :

Yeah.

Lindsay McMahon :

Correct. What do you wish y'all had? Practice you lot wish you had any pets?

Michelle :

Oh yeah. I wish I had a dog. I really practise.

Lindsay McMahon :

Aye, considering yous had a dog as a kid, right? You lot had a beagle. You lot told us.

Michelle :

Right. I had a beagle named Petey.

Lindsay McMahon :

Aww then beautiful. Beagles are really cute. Sometimes they're kind of like yippity though. Aren't they? They bark a lot or no?

Michelle :

They bawl and they seize with teeth. Well at to the lowest degree mine did. He bit.

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh my gosh. Oh, was he a bad dog? No, just nervous.

Michelle :

I think he had like, he was a rescue dog.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay.

Michelle :

And we think that he had had similar, when they rescued him, he was merely four pounds.

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh no.

Michelle :

No, no, no, he was, well, it was actually, all correct, well now at that place's a whole story, but he was like at the shelter and it was going to be his last day. So this woman came to rescue him and he was four pounds at the pound. So I don't know how much he weighed when they got him, but.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay.

Michelle :

Anyway, the moral of the story is I loved having him, but he had some troubles, but I adored him.

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh yeah. You got to love your family unit dog. I beloved that. Yeah. I mean, I wish I had two dogs. I have ane. I wish I had two, but I tin't. They're expensive. Having two dogs is a lot. It's a lot.

Michelle :

Yep. I am sure.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And and then there'due south, just to cease off wish guys, I hope y'all're taking notes here. This is really expert stuff. There is i other fashion that we utilize I wish in a very emphatic way. What would that be Michelle?

Michelle :

Well, let's do a little part play.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay. Is your dad going to purchase you a new car?

Michelle :

I wish.

Lindsay McMahon :

I love your intonation there. It's very clear. Then what are you trying to say with that intonation and using, I wish here?

Michelle :

Information technology'due south like, oh, I would love that, but it's very unlikely.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So by and large what's the full general dominion here with wish Michelle, would you say?

Michelle :

The general rule is it can be used in the past tense or in a fairytale kind of emphatic expression.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yep. And talking about the by, things you tin't change that have already happened, when you don't command the event. Or over again it's something you actually desire, but yous know is never going to happen. I wish. Right.

Michelle :

Correct. I wish.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah.

Michelle :

It's fun to say that.

Lindsay McMahon :

I recall I hear teenagers say that kind of thing a lot. Are your parents going to extend your curfew? I wish.

Michelle :

I wish. Yeah, for sure.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yes. Yes. Okay. Let'southward become to hope now. Let'due south flip information technology over to hope. What is hope, I hope?

Michelle :

Hope is also, I hateful, in general, it's better for future tenses. I accept something in my head as like an exception, only,

Lindsay McMahon :

Oh, sure.

Michelle :

In general, it is better for the future. You lot don't really, like in those nosotros gave, hope simply wouldn't work. Then it focus on more of like aspirations.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah.

Michelle :

And it tin be used also for the present tense, but again, it works more than for the future tense. So like I promise to find love. And then this is talking about the future.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yep. And then at present we're future focused, future or present focused. Earlier with wish we were focusing on the past and the things nosotros can't control. Now we're focusing on the future and the present. And so another one is I hope I get a proficient TOEFL score or I hope to get a good TOEFL score. Both would exist okay, right?

Michelle :

And and so this one, so this is an exception.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. Oh, those exceptions, they only kill usa. Nosotros effort to set a rule and then we have the exception right in forepart of us correct, Michelle?

Michelle :

Right. Guys, we're focusing on the basic full general way of thinking of these things. And then we'll give you the exception, but don't freak out. Right. It merely happened. I hope you enjoyed the show. That's kind of a good clamper. But today we want yous to focus on this idea of time to come and past. And then that'south what we desire to focus on. Plain there are going to exist times when at that place are exceptions, because I don't know that there is ever a moment in English where in that location isn't an exception. Okay.

Lindsay McMahon :

Exactly. And so I recollect i actually good pro tip that could kind of brand this actually clear guys, is this, if y'all don't know the outcome of something use hope. Correct. Considering it'southward uncertain. Information technology'south unsure. Just if yous know the event and information technology tin't be changed, use wish. Considering wish has a sense of, oh, there'south not really anything I can do most it.

Michelle :

Oh I wish. Yes, yes, yes.

Lindsay McMahon :

No control.

Michelle :

That's a good point.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. No agency.

Michelle :

That is a skilful pro tip. Yes, exactly. I similar it. Well, let's practice this role play Lindsay.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay. Yeah.

Michelle :

And we'll go through it.

Lindsay McMahon :

Okay. Let's do it. So, all right. So, okay. The deadline is Friday. What exercise you promise to accomplish in the next few days?

Michelle :

Oh, I wish nosotros had started earlier. I'k such a procrastinator.

Lindsay McMahon :

I was absent the day this was assigned. I wish I'd been in form that mean solar day.

Michelle :

Well, there's no use worrying about that now. I'm hoping we can finish the artwork and most of the slides by tomorrow.

Lindsay McMahon :

Sounds expert. I asked to borrow my friend'due south laptop because mine is broken. I hope he says yes.

Michelle :

Well, maybe you'll get a new laptop for Christmas.

Lindsay McMahon :

I wish.

Michelle :

Okay.

Lindsay McMahon :

So by saying I wish in that location, I'one thousand basically saying I'grand probably not going to go one, right?

Michelle :

Right, correct, right. Exactly.

Lindsay McMahon :

Information technology'due south important. Right. Considering that's of import to say that likewise. Correct. And then this is coming back to the lack of agency. If I had said yes, I hope I do. It'southward a possibility and information technology's probably a existent likelihood. Right, Michelle?

Michelle :

Right, correct, right. And I did want to bring something about hope, correct, again, like we said, it tin be used in the present tense. So actually the example of, I hope you enjoyed the show. You are still hoping in the present tense.

Lindsay McMahon :

Exactly.

Michelle :

And then I just wanted to brand that point to clarify.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah. That's a expert point, because right now y'all're hoping, even though the show happened earlier, it'southward correct now that yous accept the emotion of hope.

Michelle :

Yeah. Then I wanted to just make that point.

Lindsay McMahon :

That's a good betoken, Michelle. Permit's go back to this part play and merely rehash it a piddling bit for our listeners. So the kickoff thing I said was what do you hope to accomplish in the next few days? Again, forward looking. That'southward a perfect example.

Michelle :

And and so I said, I wish we had started earlier, correct? I wish, thinking about the by. Right. I couldn't say, I hope we had started earlier. That wouldn't work.

Lindsay McMahon :

Perfect. So once again, things yous don't accept control over anymore because they're washed and looking backwards. And so I said again, I'm looking backwards and I can't change it at present. I'm saying, I wish I had been in class that day. Tin't modify it. Right, Michelle?

Michelle :

Right, correct, right, right. You can't modify it. And then I said, I'm hoping nosotros can terminate the artwork and most of the slides by tomorrow. So that'southward more future looking.

Lindsay McMahon :

Exactly. I beloved that. And so I said, I asked to borrow my friend'southward laptop because mine's broken and I hope he says yes. Right. I hope again, forward looking guys, looking ahead. He probably, he might, in that location's a good take a chance. And so I hope.

Michelle :

And then I said, well perchance you'll go a new laptop for Christmas. And y'all said, I wish.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah.

Michelle :

It's similar, that would be great. Just there'south very little gamble of that.

Lindsay McMahon :

Yep. This is a cracking part play considering I similar how at the end we use that example of the, how sometimes teenagers will use that, right, when they don't think there's a chance of something. And so that's actually skillful. Very cool. This has been good, Michelle. And so this has again, number 13. Guys, there's xiii more top mistakes, all right, that nosotros're going to or 12 more. So make sure you lot hit follow on All Ears English. Right, Michelle? Because they don't desire to miss these.

Michelle :

Don't miss it. Why would you do that?

Lindsay McMahon :

Yeah, don't miss information technology. Don't miss it. So nosotros're looking forrard to the next 1. And Michelle, thanks for hanging out and talking almost wish versus hope. Good topic.

Michelle :

All right. Thanks. I hope to talk to y'all once again soon.

Lindsay McMahon :

I hope so too.

Michelle :

All right. Bye Lindsay.

Lindsay McMahon :

All correct. Take care. Goodbye.

Michelle :

Bye.
